Iowa DOT issues scam alert

The Iowa Department of Transportation is warning consumers of recent text scams that are occurring in Iowa and across the country. Fraudulent text messages appearing to come from the Iowa DOT or “DMV” are targeting recipients with false claims of unpaid traffic violations. Individuals are also receiving fraudulent Iowa DOT-generated text messages stating that they have an unpaid toll or registration fee. Scotch doubles tournament benefit for Dave Knupp Saturday

Double Up for Dave Knupp benefit Scotch doubles tournament is 9 a.m. Saturday at the Eagles Club, 1018 First Ave. N. Knupp is a long time pool and dart player and was diagnosed with brain, lung and bone cancer. Draw time is 9 a.m. with starting time at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $20 per player, $40 per team. There will also be a silent auction and lunch. All funds raised will go to assist with medical and daily expenses. Veterans memorial to be dedicated in Varina

VARINA — The new Varina Area Veterans Memorial will be dedicated at 10:30 a.m. June 8 in the Pocahontas County community’s park. The dedication will be part of the city’s quasquicentennial celebration. The memorial lists more than 270 names of local veterans who served during both war and peace throughout the city’s existence. Ten of those veterans were killed in action. During World War II, more than 175 Varina area men and women served in the military. Fireside Chat set for Thursday

Webster and Hamilton County Conservation is holding a Fireside Chat at 6 p.m. Thursday at Camp WaNoKi, 2400 WaNoKi Camp Road. Geocaching is a good way to get outdoors to explore new places. Join the quest for some hidden geocaches to Camp WaNoKi. Many use their cell phones, but GPS units will be available. All ages are welcome.

Rules for cemetery decorations announced

Memorial Day decorations on graves at Oakland, Memorial Park and North Lawn cemeteries may be put up three days before the holiday, according to an announcement from the Fort Dodge Public Areas Department. Decorations must be removed seven days after the holiday.
