Woman enters plea deal in arson case
A Fort Dodge woman has pleaded guilty to setting an apartment on fire in January, according to court records.
Megan S. Freeman, 34, pleaded guilty to second degree arson, those records indicate.
She is accused of setting a fire in a second story apartment at 211 N. 12th St on the afternoon of Jan. 26. That apartment sustained serious fire damage, while the rest of the second floor sustained heat and smoke damage. No one was injured.
The building was later torn down and the lot where it stood remains empty.
Freeman was arrested by Fort Dodge police on Jan. 27 and was charged with first degree arson, third degree arson and first degree harassment.
Prosecutors and her defense attorney reached an agreement in which she would plead guilty to second degree arson and the other charges would be dropped.
Freeman was sentenced Tuesday by District Court Judge Kurt Stoebe, She received a 10-year prison term, which was suspended. She was also fined $1.370, but the fine was also suspended.
She was ordered to serve three years of probation. She was also ordered to stay in a residential correctional facility for 180 days. She is to remain in the Webster County Jail until a spot becomes available in such a facility.
Freeman had agreed to a very similar plea deal in April. She was released from jail in early April after a spot became available in a residential treatment program at the YWCA.
However, she failed to show up for an April 21 plea hearing, so an arrest warrant was issued for her.
She was arrested in Fort Dodge on May 5 and has been in jail since that time.
