FDFD: Change smoke detector batteries

While residents are resetting their clocks tonight for Daylight Savings Time, they should do one other chore that could potentially save their lives, according to Fort Dodge firefighters.

The firefighters recommend that everyone change the batteries in their smoke detectors.

“Saving your life can be as simple as changing your smoke alarm batteries once a year and replacing smoke alarms every seven to 10 years,” said Fort Dodge firefighter Nick Carlson.

The firefighters recommend dual purpose smoke detectors that use both ionization and photoelectric technology. Such detectors should be placed in every bedroom, outside of every bedroom and on each floor of the home.

“You should also install carbon monoxide alarms in your home and check them once a month,” Carlson said.
