Nelson named to role at Iowa Central

She will move from Growth Alliance to community college

Jill Nelson, a veteran leader of the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance, has been named vice president of strategic initiatives at Iowa Central Community College.

The appointment was announced Thursday afternoon by the Growth Alliance and the college.

Nelson most recently served as vice president of the Growth Alliance.

In her new role, Nelson will serve as a strategic advisor to college President Jesse Ulrich, providing leadership across major institutional initiatives while playing a central role in advancing Iowa Central’s government relations strategy. She will work closely with elected officials, policymakers, and community partners to advocate for the college’s priorities, ensure clear and consistent communication, and strengthen relationships that support student success, workforce development, and long-term institutional sustainability.

“Jill is a proven relationship-builder and strategic thinker who understands how institutions succeed at the intersection of policy, community, and execution,” Ulrich said.

“Her experience in government relations and her ability to navigate complex initiatives will be a tremendous asset as Iowa Central continues to advance its mission and advocate effectively for our students and region,” he added. “Her appointment reflects Iowa Central’s continued commitment to proactive leadership, strong public partnerships, and strategic alignment in support of student success and community impact.”

Nelson brings nearly two decades of experience in organizational leadership, strategic planning, and community engagement. As vice president of the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance, she was deeply involved in government relations, public-private partnerships, and regional economic development. Her work included regular engagement with local and state officials, presentations before governing bodies, and collaboration on initiatives aligned with public policy and community priorities.

“I am grateful for my time at the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance and the opportunity to work alongside incredible leaders and partners who are dedicated to advancing economic development and community growth,” Nelson said.

“While at the Growth Alliance, I’ve had the privilege of partnering with Iowa Central on a variety of initiatives, an experience that has given me a deep appreciation for the college’s impact,” she said. “Those experiences have shaped my commitment to collaboration and advocacy, and I’m excited to bring those relationships and insights to my new role at Iowa Central Community College.”

She started at the Growth Alliance in August 2014 as community development director. She became vice president on Jan. 1, 2025.

Nelson holds a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies and a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Luther College in Decorah and has a Certificate of Organization Management through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Organization Management.

She and her husband, Derek, live on an acreage in Calhoun County with their four children.
