Hawkeye brings tale of four friends to the stage

‘The Savannah Sipping Society’ debuts on Wednesday in FD

Hawkeye Community Theatre will be showcasing a production of “The Savannah Sipping Society” Wednesday through Saturday.

Written by Nicolas Hope, Jaime Wooten, and Jessie Jones, “The Savannah Sipping Society” is a comedy about a group of Southern women getting together for their own happy hour. This production is directed by Kari Horn and stars Alyssa Sparks, Amber Rouse, Heidi Ingram, Nicole Tracy, and Jess Barkhaus.

“‘The Savannah Sipping Society’ is about four middle-aged women that meet up and they’re on a mission to improve their lives,” Horn said. “They each have something different going on, like a major life change, and so they come together. They build this friendship and learn to make a life for themselves with these new changes, like one’s husband of forever has passed away. One has been fired from a long-term career. One was recently divorced, and then one is kind of lost and trying to find her place in the world. They start meeting up every Friday and through that journey they become a family of their own.”

Showtime is 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. All shows are at the theater, 521 N. 12th St.

Horn has been involved with Hawkeye Community Theatre for a number of years.

“I have been on the board for a couple of years now,” she said. “I want to say I was in my first show for Hawkeye, I think, in 2013 and I’ve been doing shows with them, and also Comedia; that’s where I first started. I started off as acting in the cast, and then I’ve gone on to do set building and helping with the backstage stuff.”

“This is the first time I’ve taken on the director’s side and kind of gotten a feel for the whole way through the process,” she added.

Directing seemed like a natural progression for Horn, who said, “I call the theater my happy place. The Hawkeye is where I go to feel happy and enjoy myself and the friendships that I’ve created there. So through that, I’ve found encouragement. You get to put your own ideas and to bring this story to life with the way you see it in your mind. I was intrigued, and I’ve been thinking about it a little bit here and there for a couple of years. I finally just said, ‘To heck with it, I’m going to try it.'”

Horn is excited for her opportunity to present Fort Dodge with her vision of theater.

“I just think that there is something in the show that everyone can relate to,” she said. “It is hilarious to see how things work out for these ladies, and I really hope everyone can come out to it.”

Starting at $4.94/week.
