Standoff ends without incident

Man was having mental health crisis

DAYTON — A two-hour-long standoff in Dayton ended without incident on Thursday evening.

At about 4 p.m. Webster County deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of First Street Northeast in Dayton for a man having a mental health crisis. According to law enforcement, the man had threatened to set his residence on fire.

A Webster County deputy arrived on scene and attempted contact with the male while he was outside, however, the man walked away from the deputy and back into the residence.

Deputies then contacted family members who stated the man was the only person in the residence and that they were not aware that he had made threats to physically harm himself or anyone else.

Webster County deputies attempted to make contact with the man at the home’s windows and doors as well as via a PA system, but received no response. While securing the perimeter, deputies were able to see movement inside the residence.

After approximately two hours with no response, law enforcement left the scene due to no criminal charges or threats of violence.

Webster County Sheriff Luke Fleener said “there was no threat to the community.”

A mental health referral has been sent to the Central Iowa Community Services for follow up with the individual.

The Webster County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Gowrie Police Department, Department of Natural Resources, Iowa State Patrol, Dayton Fire Department, and Dayton Rescue Squad.
