Fort Dodge council purchases cemetery equipment

After taking ownership of North Lawn Cemetery last month, the Fort Dodge City Council on Monday bought some equipment to help maintain and run the site.

The following purchases were approved:

• A skid loader with multiple attachments from R & J Material Handling, of Fort Dodge, for $87,890.31

• A mini excavator from Mid Country Machinery, of Fort Dodge, for $69,931.70

• A Ram 2500 pickup from Shimkat Motor Co., of Fort Dodge, for $46,371

• An equipment trailer from Trailer World LLC, of Fort Dodge, for $6,100

The money to pay for that equipment will come from the perpetual care fund of North Lawn Cemetery.

Maintaining Memorial Park, North Lawn and Oakland cemeteries is one of the responsibilities of the city’s new Public Areas Department.

Also on Monday, the council submitted an application to the Iowa Economic Development Authority for a $1.7 million grant. If the money is awarded, it will be used to help redevelop the Third Avenue Northwest Corridor.

Councilmembers Cameron Nelson and Lydia Schuur were absent from the otherwise unanimous votes to buy the equipment and apply for the grant.

Starting at $4.94/week.
