FD Council OKs $117M budget

A roughly $117 million budget for the next fiscal year was unanimously approved by the Fort Dodge City Council Monday.

City Manager David Fierke gave the elected officials an overview of the spending plan during a workshop that preceded the council’s business meeting Monday. There was no discussion by the council prior to the vote.

The budget is for the fiscal year that will begin July 1 and end June 30, 2025.

The total spending is set at $117,623,294.

That’s down from the current year’s spending of about $161 million.

The property tax rate in the new budget year will be $20.95 per $1,000 of taxable value.

That is up about 20 cents from the current rate of $20.74 per $1,000 of taxable value.

Fierke said that increase is in the portion of the levy that pays for the city’s property and liability insurance. That went up, he said, because of premium increases.

Jeff Nemmers, the city’s finance director, said taxable value of homes in the city went down due to a state formula called the rollback which determines how much of property’s assessed value is taxable. He said in the 2024-2025 fiscal year, 47 percent of a home’s assessed value is taxable.

“Even though the rate went up, we’re not raising taxes,” he said.

The budget also includes revenue from the water, sanitary sewer, and storm water utilities, plus solid waste collection fees. Water rates went up 8 percent Jan. 1. Sanitary sewer rates went up 6 percent at the same time.
