Feenstra, Sexton draw primary foes

Kraayenbrink, Meyer unopposed

The congressman who represents the Webster County area and a veteran state lawmaker face primary election challenges this year.

But two other state lawmakers from Fort Dodge have no primary or general election opponents.

The races for the U.S. House of Representatives and the Iowa legislature were set Friday with the passing of a deadline for filing nominating petitions with Secretary of State Paul Pate.

Congress

U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra, R-Hull, is seeking his third term in the Fourth Congressional District, which includes Webster County and all of its surrounding counties.

He faces a primary election challenge from Kevin Virgil, of Sutherland.

The winner of the June 4 primary will face Democrat Ryan Melton, of Nevada. He is unopposed for his party’s nomination. Melton is making his second run for the seat.

House District 7

State Rep. Mike Sexton, R-Rockwell City, is seeking his sixth term.

He is being challenged for the Republican nomination by Wendy Larson, of Odebolt.

The Republican primary will likely determine who holds the seat, because no Democrats have entered the race.

House District 7 includes Calhoun, Pocahontas and Sac counties plus western Webster County.

Unopposed

State Sen. Tim Kraayenbrink, R-Fort Dodge, has no Republican or Democratic opposition in Senate District 4.

Redistricting in the wake of the 2020 census is forcing him to run even though he was reelected in 2022. The redistricting moved Kraayenbrink from an odd-numbered Senate district to an even numbered one. Even-numbered seats are always on the ballot during presidential election years.

Kraayenbrink was first elected in 2014 and then reelected in 2018 and 2022.

Senate District 4 includes Calhoun, Pocahontas, Sac and Webster counties.

State Rep. Ann Meyer, R-Fort Dodge, has no Republican or Democratic opposition in House District 8. She is seeking her fourth term.

Hamilton County

There are two state legislative seats on the ballot this year that include Hamilton County.

In Senate District 28, state Sen. Dennis Guth, R-Klemme, is unopposed for his party’s nomination. Cynthia Oppedal Paschen, of Jewell, is unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

In House District 55, state Rep. Shannon Latham, R-Sheffield, has no Republican or Democratic opposition.
