Almost Home to suspend adoption fees

Empty the Shelter effort starts Thursday

Anyone who has ever considered adopting a dog or a cat from the Almost Home Humane Society of North Central Iowa will have an added incentive to do so starting next week.

No adoption fees will be charged beginning Thursday and continuing through Feb. 10, according to an announcement from the society.

The Bissell Pet Foundation is joining forces with the local humane society to sponsor this Empty the Shelter event.

It follows an Empty the Shelter effort conducted in December that resulted in 58 pets being adopted.

The upcoming effort is related to a puppy mill rescue conducted elsewhere in Iowa, according to Paul Shane, executive director of Almost Home. He said the local humane society has taken in some dogs from another shelter so that other facility can accommodate the rescued dogs.

As of Thursday, Almost Home had 31 dogs and 41 cats.

Shane said anyone interested in adopting a pet should promptly complete an application.

“The screening process can take a few days to complete so it is important to get applications in as early as possible,” he said.

Adoption applications can be obtained at www.almosthomeiowa.org or at the shelter, 725 S. 32nd St.

The shelter is open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anyone with questions about this initiative can contact Shane at 515-955-8343 or director@almosthomeiowa.org.
