Morning blaze destroys garage
Fire destroyed a garage Thursday morning southwest of Fort Dodge, not far from the Webster County Fairgrounds.
The fire at 23121 Old Highway 169 was reported at 8:55 a.m. No one was injured.
The fire began when flames from a burn barrel spread to a two-car garage which is attached to a house by a breezeway.
Marcene Vaske, who owns the rental property, said the burn barrel had been taken from another of her rental homes and had been placed in a fenced off area behind the garage so that it could be taken to the landfill later. She said a relative of one of her tenants, who was not supposed to be on the property, started a fire in the barrel.
“This was not my renters,” Vaske said
She said she does not allow outside fires on the property.
“I am just sick about the whole deal,” she added.
Otho Fire Chief Marty Smith said the garage is a total loss. A car inside the garage, which Vaske said was a Ford Mustang, was also destroyed.
Smith said a brick fire wall between the garage and the house prevented the flames from spreading into the house. The house did sustain smoke damage.
There are fire hydrants in that neighborhood, but they are so far from the scene that firefighters used tankers to supply water, according to Smith.
The Otho, Moorland and Fort Dodge fire departments responded.
