A Fort Dodge man was killed early Tuesday morning when the bus he was driving left the roadway and rolled in a field off of old U.S. Highway 20 near Moorland.

According to Iowa State Patrol Trooper Paul Gardner, Jeffrey Lennon, 56, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Express — an old yellow school bus — westbound on old Highway 20 when he failed to navigate the curve just west of Baxter Avenue. The bus went into the adjacent field and rolled several times, Gardner said.

The bus was not an official school bus, and Lennon was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Gardner said investigators are trying to piece together the timeline of what happened, but they believe the bus went off the road around 6 a.m. and a passerby saw the bus in a nearby field and called it in around 6:45 a.m.

When troopers and deputies with the Webster County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene, Lennon was already deceased, Gardner said. The Fort Dodge Fire Department and Moorland Fire Department also responded.

The crash remains under investigation. According to Gardner, Lennon’s body was transported to the Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny for autopsy.
