New water assistance program is taking applications

Iowa has launched a new low-income household water assistance program.

As part of an ongoing effort to assist with the financial impact of the pandemic, Iowa received $10 million in federal aid to help households that are facing overdue water bills and possible disconnection of service or those who have already lost water service.

The program will provide assistance in the form of payments made directly to water vendors on behalf of households for past-due charges, fees, and taxes for drinking and wastewater services. The program will be hosted by the Iowa Department of Human Rights and Iowa’s Community Action Agencies in all 99 counties.

Iowans can apply now by contacting their local Community Action Agency. Program eligibility will be the same as those who are eligible for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Programs. Applicants’ total household income must be at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines and a current water crisis must be present.

The application will be open year-round and will run through Sept. 30, 2023, or until funds are exhausted.
