One Sac County Jail escapee captured Friday

Police still looking for Freier

Shawn Freier

SAC CITY — One of the men who escaped the Sac County Jail on Friday was located and arrested on Saturday, the Sac County Sheriff’s Office reported.

On Friday, Joseph Sly, 35, of Rockwell City, was being moved from the main cell area back to a holding cell after taking a shower, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

When a female correctional officer was opening the main cell door, Shawn Freier, 25, of Lake View, grabbed her.

Sly and Freier forced the correctional officer into the main cellblock and locked her inside, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The two men ran down a stairwell before being confronted by a custodian who heard the commotion. The custodian opened a locked door at the bottom of the staircase.

Sly shoved the custodian out of the way and ran down the hall. Sly exited the building.

At the bottom of the stairway, Freier entered the kitchen area through an unlocked door. That’s when he jumped out a first-floor window and ran south from the jail. Sly headed south.

Law enforcement officers from surrounding areas responded to assist in the search for the men.

On Saturday, an off-duty Lake City police reserve officer was driving through Sac City when he spotted Sly at about 7:28 a.m.

Sly was walking on North Fifth Street.

The officer was able to take Sly into custody without incident. Sly has been returned to the Sac County Jail.

Freier remained at large as of Sunday night.

Freier is serving time for domestic violence charges. Sly faces charges in Calhoun County for domestic violence and sex abuse.

Both men are now charged with escape from custody.

Additional charges are pending.

Responding to assist the Sac County Sheriff’s Office and Sac City Police Department were the Lake View Police, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Carroll Police, Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers, Fonda Police Department, emergency management from Calhoun and Webster Counties and Sac County Ambulance.

Anyone with information on the location of Freier should call the Sac County Sheriff’s Office at 712-662-7127 or 911.
