Area Veterans Day events
The following is a list of area events in observation of Veterans Day.
Fort Dodge — 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, IowaWORKS Veteran’s Appreciation Open House, 3 Triton Circle. Snacks and refreshments will be served. Please wear red, white and blue.; 8:45 a.m., Friday, Fort Dodge Senior High gym, 819 N. 25th St. Veterans are asked to wear their uniforms if possible. Cookies and coffee will be served in the cafeteria from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. Parking will be available on the west side of the high school in the new auxiliary parking lot.; 10 a.m., Friday, St. Edmond High School, 2321 Sixth Ave. N.
Algona — 9:30 a.m., Friday, Ed & Betty Wilcox Performing Arts Center; 5 p.m., Monday, Algona VFW Post 2541, supper at 6 p.m. followed by a program.
Barnum — 1:30 p.m., Friday, Manson Northwest Webster Elementary School.
Clarion — 10 a.m., Friday, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School Gymnasium. There will be Presentation of Colors by the Clarion American Legion and Clarion VFW. Guests will be welcomed by Superintendent Robert Olson. Military music will be performed by the High School Band directed by Kent Wesselink. CGD fourth grade students will perform vocal musical selections including “God Bless America” and “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”. The fifth-grade students will have a flag folding demonstration with an explanation of each fold. Third-grade students will welcome each veteran to the program. Second-grade students have written letters to the veterans. First-graders made poppy centerpieces for the luncheon tables. Kindergarten students made the welcome banners on display around the cafeteria. Two videos are planned, one dealing with the origin of Veterans Day-Armistice Day and the other a history of the Star Spangled Banner. There will be a military selection sung by the CGD High School Chorus under Director David Ackerman. A 21-gun salute and Taps played by Junior Alex Williams will proceed the Colors being retired. A free lunch will be provided for veterans and their families by Wholly Smoke BBQ of Dows. Others wishing to eat are asked for a $5 donation. The program is open to all veterans and the general public.
Eagle Grove — 1:30 p.m., Friday, Robert Blue Middle School Commons.
Emmetsburg — 11 a.m., Friday, VFW Post 2295 Building. The program will include a guest speaker from the Iowa Army National Guard and music from the Emmetsburg Catholic School. Following the program, the VFW Auxiliary will serve hot dogs and chips.
Gilmore City — 1 p.m., Friday, Gilmore City-Bradgate School Gym.
Gowrie — 10 a.m., Friday, Southeast Valley High School; American Legion Post 431 will hold a potluck supper at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Legion Building, social hour at 5:30 p.m. All veterans and their spouses are invited.
Humboldt — 11 a.m., Saturday, Humboldt County Courthouse in Dakota City. Commander David Lee opens the ceremony with a welcome and will introduce the Rev. Aaron Flatau, Zion Lutheran Church; Flatau will be giving the opening prayer; Commander Lee leads the Pledge of Allegiance; Sandi Lee will be giving the Veterans day speech; Harmony Brigade will sing; Honor Guard will give 21-gun salute followed by taps; Commander Lee and President Tammy Harms will place the memorial wreath; service concludes. In case of inclement weather, it will be held at the Post 5240 in Dakota City one block east of court house
Jewell — 8 a.m., Thursday, South Hamilton High School. 8 a.m. breakfast, 9 a.m., ceremony.
Manson Northwest Webster — 11 a.m., Friday, Manson Northwest Webster High School.
Pocahontas — 10 a.m., Friday, Pocahontas Area Community School Gym. The military service stories of area men and women will be showcased. The speaker will be Capt. John Boyd, retired naval aviator, a Pocahontas native son.
Rockwell City — 1:30 p.m., Friday, South Central Calhoun Middle School gym.
Ruthven — 10:30 a.m., Friday, Ruthven-Ayrshire Community School.
Sac City — 2:45 p.m., Friday, East Sac County Middle School auditorium.
Stratford — 3 p.m., Saturday, Freedom Rock Park. Hamilton County Freedom Rock dedication.
Webster City — 10:30 a.m., Friday, Webster City Middle School mulitipurpose room 1 p.m., Friday, Webster City High School; 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, depot museum at Wilson Brewer Park. Open house to celebrate Veterans Day.
