NEWS: Sandra Lake-Bullock, a Fort Dodge native, was the executive director of The Neighborhood Place in Davenport, where she helped families learn to survive without welfare.

SPORTS: The Fort Dodge baseball team was headed to the Class 4A district final after beating Spencer 8-4.

50 Years ago: July 17, 1969

NEWS: George W. Dickey, of Fort Dodge, celebrated his 83rd birthday by visiting the pioneer Border Plains schoolhouse where he started school 75 years ago.

SPORTS: Chris Philips, former basketball standout at Sac City High School and the University of Iowa, fired a course record 28 over the Sac City Country Club. The old mark was 31.
