130 FDSH students take part in College Application Day

Fort Dodge Senior High hosted its annual College Application Day on Oct. 4. One-hundred thirty members of the Class of 2020 participated.

During College Application Day, students apply to one of the post-secondary schools they are considering. Representatives from Trio at Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa Central Community College and Buena Vista University were on hand to answer questions and assist students with their applications. In addition, students created a Federal Student Aid identification, which is the first step in filling out the FAFSA.

For students not considering college, the work-based learning coordinator from Iowa Central was on hand to talk about employment opportunities, as well as a representative from the Army.

“This is an important event for our seniors because it gives them a chance to see the options available to them,” said Trista Thompson, FDSH school counselor. “This is a dedicated time set aside for students to apply to a college and start the FAFSA process surrounded by people who can assist them. It’s one way we are trying to remove barriers and build a college-going culture at Senior High.”
