EMMETSBURG — The 2017-18 recipient of the Thomas Lee Bortvit Memorial Scholarship is Joshua Petrich, of Graettinger.

The Thomas Lee Bortvit Memorial Scholarship was created by his family and friends in honor of an honest, hardworking, responsible young man who always thought of others first. Bortvit died June 6, 2015. He was enrolled in the Criminal Justice Program at Iowa Lakes at the time of his death. His passion for this industry and his dedication to others inspired many.

Candidates for the scholarship must be enrolled at Iowa Lakes Community College and be involved in the Criminal Justice Program. The successful recipient must maintain a minimum GPA, and show financial need as determined by FAFSA. Candidates must also reside within Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Kossuth, Palo Alto counties with preference given to Emmet County residents. Funds may be used for tuition, books or fees.
