‘Love is All You Need’
FD symphony to play Valentines Day themed show

The music of love will be in the air at the next concert of the Fort Dodge Area Symphony.
The concert will begin at 3 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Fort Dodge Middle School, 800 N. 32nd St.
And since the concert is a few days before Valentines Day, its theme is “Love Is All You Need.”
It will feature songs from a Des Moines composer and The Beatles.
“It’s going to be a great show from top to bottom,” said Joshua Barlage, the symphony’s conductor. “The tunes are melodies that people are going to recognize.”

Admission will be by season membership or $15 at the door. Students and children accompanied by an adult will be admitted free.
The first song concert-goers will hear is “Overture to Lunatics and Lovers” by Linda Robbins Coleman, of Des Moines. Barlage described it as a “nice, springy, bubbly piece to get things going.”
A song that was featured in TV commercials for a jewelry company will also be performed. Its title, “Allegretto from Palladio,” isn’t a household name. But once the symphony starts playing it, many listeners will recognize it as the music from the DeBeers TV commercials that always had the tagline “A diamond is forever.”
Spartacus, who led an ill-fated revolt against the Roman Empire centuries ago, may seem like an unlikely inspiration for a love song. However, there is such a song and concertgoers will hear it on Feb. 8. Barlage said it came from a 1950s ballet about Spartacus. It is called “Adagio from Spartacus.”
According to Barlage, the Italian word adagio means slow and refers to the tempo at which the music is played.

The Beatles sang lots of love songs and a few of them have been arranged into a piece for orchestra that will be performed Feb. 8. Barlage said the piece features parts of The Beatles’ songs “Got to Get You Into My Life,” “Michelle,” and “Get Back.,” among other songs.
The concert will conclude with Symphony No. 2 Romantic by Howard Hanson. Barlage said it has “all those lush cinematic tones you’d expect to hear in an old romance movie.”
