King Band to feature Jive for Five Sunday

The Karl L. King Municipal Band, conducted by Jerrold P. Jimmerson, will continue its weekly concerts on Sunday evening. Concert time is 7:30 p.m. at the Karl L. King Band Shell in Oleson Park. There is no admission charge, courtesy of the city of Fort Dodge. The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church from Fort Dodge will again be selling homemade ice cream and cake before and during the concert, starting around 6:30 p.m.

Before the main concert starts, the popular area Brass Quintet, Jive for Five, will do a pre-concert performance, starting at 7 p.m. Group members include Tim Miller from Humboldt on trumpet; David Swaroff from Belmond on trumpet; Kathy Yoakam from Humboldt on French horn; Dan Cassady from Twin Lakes on trombone; and Paul Bloomquist from Dayton on tuba. These musicians are also all members of the King Band, and will perform “That’s A-Plenty” and the “Glenn Miller Selections,” (which includes “In the Mood,” “Moonlight Serenade” and “St. Louis Blues”) during the regular concert with the band accompanying.

Marches on the evening program will include “Phillipian Festival,” “The Three Musketeers” and “The Purple Pageant,” all by the band’s namesake, Karl L. King, along with King’s exciting circus galop, “Prestissimo.”

Other selections on the evening’s program will include the classical works from P.I. Tchaikovsky’s “Andante from Symphony #6” and the “Berceuse and Finale” from Igor Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite.” Traditional band works will include “A Festival Prelude” by Alfred Reed and “Chorale and Capriccio” by Caesar Giovannini. Leroy Anderson’s popular waltz, “Belle of the Ball” will round out the evening’s program. Closing this concert will be our national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Persons attending this Sunday’s concert are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, etc., since there is no seating available. In case of inclement weather, the concert may be cancelled at the starting time. Any announcements will be made on the band’s Facebook page listing for the Karl L. King Municipal Band at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/ or on the band’s website at www.karlking.us.
