Fun run returns

Facing Autism to host family-friendly fundraiser

Some of the participants in a past Super Hero Fun Run make their way down the trail at Rosedale Rapids.

The 3rd Annual Superhero Fun Run returns October 16 after being unable to hold their event in 2020.

Local non-profit Facing Autism Inc. holds this event each year as their main fundraising event. Funds raised go towards their efforts to serve those with special needs in the community.

Facing Autism Inc. aims to raise awareness and acceptance for individuals who are on the Autism spectrum. They plan events for individuals with autism and their families. Their events are open to all individuals with any kind of special need be it physical, mental, emotional, or behavioral. In addition, they provide educational resources and hold meetings to raise awareness.

As a non-profit, Facing Autism Inc. depends on volunteers, donations, and fundraising events such as this fun run.

Past events have had a family fun fair but Director Janel Lincoln said they decided this year to simplify the fun run and save the vendors and extra activities for their spring awareness event.

This year, every runner or walker who completes the 5k will receive a medal. Lincoln said an exciting addition this year is a foam machine at the finish line for walkers or runners to enjoy if they choose to.

In addition to the regular 5k, they will also have a one mile route for anyone who would prefer a shorter walk or run.

Orders for adult or youth shirts are due by the end of the day Sunday, Oct. 3 but registration just to participate will be open through the morning of the event. Lincoln said there is also the option to just purchase a shirt in support of Facing Autism if someone is unable to participate in the fun run.

“Anyone can come, they can show up the morning of, they do not have to pre-register but they just wouldn’t get a shirt,” Lincoln said.

Lincoln said the event is very family friendly and children ages 12 and under can participate for free. “Some parents like to bring their kids and we do welcome strollers,” said Lincoln.

Since this event is the Superhero Fun Run, Lincoln said they will have a fun costume contest for the “Best Dressed Superheroes”.

The 3rd Annual Superhero Fun Run will be held at Rosedale Rapids in Fort Dodge. Registration the morning of the event will begin at 9:15 a.m. and participants will take off around 10 a.m. The link to pre-register and purchase a shirt can be found on their website at facingautismfd.com.
