Finances of Caregiving workshop will be held in Fort Dodge

Finances of Caregiving, a five-session workshop from ISU Extension and Outreach, will be offered Tuesdays, August 18, 25 and September 1, 8 and 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Webster County Extension, 217 S. 25th St., Suite C-12, Fort Dodge. The program focuses on tools and strategies to assist caregivers in protecting their own financial well-being and maximize the financial and physical well-being of the person for whom they are caring.

As life expectancy increases, it is more likely adults will care for an elderly parent or relative. Twenty-nine percent of American adults are already caring for someone who is ill, disabled or aging. Being a caregiver often includes protecting the financial well-being of a care recipient as well as their physical well-being. But the financial aspects of caregiving extend further than that, according to Barb Wollan, ISU Extension Human Sciences Specialist in Family Finance, who will lead the workshops.

“For most working Americans, becoming a caregiver affects their own finances by reducing earnings and/or increasing expenses,” Wollan said. “Caregivers can reduce their financial risk by being aware of options and planning for their own long-term financial well-being even while caring for a loved one.”

Being a caregiver does not necessarily mean having someone living in your home, Wollan said.

“Caregiving includes many different ways in which people provide assistance, such as transportation or household tasks. It may mean reducing work hours or leaving work entirely, which has substantial impact on both short-term and long-term finances.”

Finances of Caregiving helps caregivers gather information, become aware of resources, and consider the overall financial impact of caregiving to make the best possible decisions for all involved.

Social distancing will be maintained during the workshop. Participants are requested to wear masks.

Pre-registration is required by Aug. 14. The program fee for all five sessions is $35 per person or for two to three members of a caregiving family. Register at https://bit.ly/foc16101.
