This appeared in the June 2020 issue of Fort Dodge Today. Ella Champagne attends Fort Dodge Middle School.

What instruments do you play?

I play alto saxophone, piano, ukulele, and I’m starting to teach myself guitar.

How often do you practice?

I practice 4 times per week on both piano and sax.

What do you enjoy about performing?

I enjoy sharing music with others.

What is the hardest part about playing an instrument and/or singing?

There are 2 hard parts about singing for me: I have had vocal nodes in the past so I have to really take care of my voice. Also, I love musical theatre and there is a lot of competition to get parts in musicals.

What kind of music do you listen to for fun?

I like to listen to musical theatre music like Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My proudest accomplishment is being in all the music and art groups I am in. Besides school related activities, I am in Stage Door Musicals, Church Choir, Blanden classes, and private sax and piano lessons.

Who do you look up to?

I look up to 3 people when it comes to being in music. My mom has always supported me in my music and has helped me a lot with practicing and singing. My grandma has also helped me a lot especially in piano and supports me a bunch. My sister is another person I look up to when it comes to music. She is in musical theatre and can help me when I’m nervous for auditions.

How do you see music in your life in 25 years?

In 25 years, I see myself doing music in the church I am attending. This could be singing in a choir/praise team or working with kids and music.

If you could take a trip anywhere in the world, where would you pick and why?

When I was younger, I got interested in going to go Bolivia, South America.

Walk us through a day in the life of Ella.

On a typical school day, I go to jazz band before school, then continue through the school day which includes band and choir. After school, I participate in sax lessons with Mr. Cassady, piano lessons, honor choir rehearsals and church choir. In my free time I enjoy doing crafts and going on bike rides. I also love cooking and baking!
