Emanuel Lutheran Church to celebrate 150th anniversary

DAYTON — Emanuel Lutheran Church in Dayton will celebrate its 150th anniversary at 10 a.m. on June 24. Bishop Rodger Prois, bishop of the ELCA Western Iowa Synod, will preside over the service. There will be a pastor procession, celebratory meal after the service, and church history booklet available for those who attend. Fun events the week leading up to the celebration include free ice cream and music at 7 p.m. on June 20 in Cadwell Park. There will be several events at the church on June 23. Encounter with Heaven concert will feature harp music

Grace Lutheran Church will host Encounters with Heaven, a concert of Heavenly Harp music at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The evening will feature the mother and son duo Karin and Ryan Gunderson performing traditional and popular pieces ranging from “What a Wonderful World” to “It is Well with My Soul” arranged for harp, piano, Native American flute and voices. Lifetree will discuss children growing up without dads

Forty percent of American children will sleep tonight in a home where their fathers don’t live. The impact of that reality will be examined at noon and 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Lifetree Cafe at Cana, 18 S. Third St. The program, titled “FatherLess: Getting past the pain of an absent or abusive dad,” features filmed interview with Donald Miller, the best-selling author of Blue Like Jazz and Father Fiction. United Methodist churches sponsoring vacation Bible school in evenings

The Fort Dodge United Methodist churches are sponsoring a summer vacation Bible school from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. on June 25 through June 28 for all children ages 3 years old to those just having completed sixth grade. The theme is “Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus.” A supper is served at 5:30 with activities to follow. It will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 838 N. 25th St. There is no fee for VBS, but we appreciate preregistering to be sure that we have enough materials. CrossWay Church plans Bible school

CrossWay Evangelical Free Church, 3058 10th Ave. N., is holding its Shipwrecked Vacation Bible School from 9 to 11 a.m. June 20 and 27 and July 11 and 18 for any child who has completed kindergarten through fourth grade. At the VBS, children will discover how Jesus rescues them through life’s storms. Lifetree topic is trade wars Tuesday

The potential impact of ongoing trade negotiations will be discussed Tuesday at noon and 7 p.m. at Lifetree Cafe, 18 S. Third St. The program, titled “In the News: Trade Wars,” features a filmed interview with Jerry Schmitz, a soybean farmer who’s concerned about the potential impact current trade negotiations may have on crop prices and foreign markets. “It’s absolutely essential that we have export markets,” Schmitz says in the interview. “As an example, in the United States, every third row of soybeans grown leaves the country.” During the program, participants ...
