Thompson to graduate DPS Basic Academy

Former Fort Dodge Police Department sergeant Evan Thompson will be one of 17 graduates of the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s 46th Basic Academy on Friday. For the past 10 weeks, Thompson and the other recruits completed courses on laws of arrest, search and seizure, defensive tactics, arrest techniques, precision driving, firearms, emergency management services, criminal law, human relations, physical fitness, human trafficking, motor vehicle law and several other courses in law enforcement. Fort Dodge Senior High students prepared 38 entries for the Iowa High School Speech Association State Individual Speech Contest held March 12. These students qualified for state by receiving Division I ratings at the district level competition last month. Sharing his dream

For the second year, Duncombe Elementary students had the opportunity to participate in the “Duncombe Dream” speech contest as part of the school’s Black History Month celebration. The students used Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech as inspiration to share what they dream about for their school and community. “The contest is a great way for us, as adults in the building, to explore what our kids are dreaming about,” said Ryan Flaherty, principal. “It’s also a good exercise for students to practice their writing and public speaking skills.” ...
