Gift makes new auditorium possible

Finding the funds to turn worthwhile projects from dreams into realities is a challenge for towns of all sizes. Small communities in rural Iowa often have to forgo or delay such undertakings because the money simply cannot be found to pay for them.

Fortunately, generous people often step forward to provide the financial support that makes important quality-of-life enhancements possible.

Ed and Betty Wilcox, of Algona, are superb examples of that type of philanthropic spirit. They have just made a $5 million commitment that will make a new performing arts center possible for the Algona Community School District.

“It’s something the community needs,” Ed Wilcox told The Messenger. “Our community needed a new auditorium.”

Marty Forney, who is the school district’s superintendent, underlined just how crucial this donation truly is.

“We really didn’t have a funding stream that would carry a whole auditorium,” he said. “So that makes this a reality so we can move forward.”

The Messenger salutes the Wilcoxes for their generosity. People of all ages in their hometown will benefit from this gift far into the future. We hope that their belief in Algona’s tomorrows will inspire others to think carefully about how they too can help their communities succeed.
