Onderdonck charged in northwest Casey’s robbery

Held on $10,000 bond

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a robbery at the Casey’s General Store on the northwest side of Fort Dodge earlier this week.

Jason D. Onderdonck, 36, of Fort Dodge, is charged with one count of second-degree robbery, a Class C felony.

Onderdonck allegedly walked into the Casey’s, located at 1230 Third Ave. N.W., around 5:15 a.m. Monday.

He’s accused of walking into the store wearing a dark cloth covering the lower half of his face and handing the clerk a note in which he demanded cash. The criminal complaint, filed with the Webster County attorney’s office, said Onderdonck threatened the clerk in the note.

After the clerk gave the suspect an undetermined amount of cash, he fled the store, heading west.

Fort Dodge police and the Webster County Sheriff’s Department both searched the area, but couldn’t find the suspect.

According to Cory Husske, assistant Fort Dodge police chief, Onderdonck was arrested Thursday night.

Husske cited the “relentless work” of the department’s Criminal Investigations Division that led to the case’s resolution “in such a timely manner.”

Onderdonck made his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Friday morning.

Magistrate Steve Kersten ordered Onderdonck held on $10,000 cash-only bond on the robbery charge.

After the bond amount was set, Onderdonck asked Kersten if there was any way he could be released on his own recognizance.

Kersten said he wasn’t going to do that.

“You can have a bond review. I’ll set a bond review at the same time as the preliminary hearing,” Kersten said. “But as of now, the bond is going to stay as I’ve set it.”

Additionally, Onderdock made an appearance on an unrelated fourth-degree theft charge.

He’s accused of stealing more than $200 worth of merchandise from Walmart earlier this month.

Kersten set his bond at $1,000 cash in that case.

The judge also issued two no-contact orders; one for all Casey’s stores, and one for the Fort Dodge Walmart.

Onderdonck’s preliminary hearing is set for May 25.
