Apollo 11 at 50

You had to be there 50 years ago, and I was. As a young reporter for a local TV station in Houston, I frequently visited NASA (“the space base,” we dubbed it), met many of the astronauts and reported on their exploits. Along with people from around the world, I watched the lunar landing on television, July 20, 1969, fulfilling President Kennedy’s goal of putting a man on the moon by the end of that decade. A new, three-part PBS documentary, “Chasing the Moon,” recalls the American space program, which followed the Russian launch of the first satellite in 1957. It is a ...

Texting lost loved one

Dear Annie. I have been dating my boyfriend for two years now. He had lost his fiancee three years before we began dating. The problem I am having is he still has his deceased fiancee’s phone number saved in his phone. He sometimes texts her, but, of course, it goes nowhere. I did ask him about it but he said he does not do it too much anymore. I found out by accident that he texted her the other night. Should I be worried? He is very sensitive and I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but it is morbid to me. What should I do? — I’m Concerned Dear Concerned: In a TED Talk in ...

No longer accepting negative talk

Dear Annie: I am writing because I’m seeking your help about my relationship with my 30-year-old granddaughter, “Nadia.” Our relationship is more of a mother-daughter type relationship, because my husband and I were involved in raising her. Our son had custody of his children because the mother had emotional problems and was not stable. My granddaughter has had issues at different points in her life because of the problems she faced with her mother. She had issues of jealousy when our other grandchildren would visit. She was self-aware enough to realize that she comes from a ...

Canada paying a price for overdependence on the US

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Vancouver’s Shaughnessy neighborhood is tucked away under so many massive trees that even on an overcast day earlier this month, both the temperature and the decibel level plummeted when I turned off busy Granville Street into this urban oasis. The neighborhood is perhaps best known as the onetime Canadian residence of actors Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Celebrities, legal eagles and tycoons, have all called this discreet enclave home. Shaughnessy is also home to one of the most prominent symbols of the geopolitical standoff between East and West — ...

Things haven’t always been this way

Here’s a suggestion. How about setting up some high school rifle clubs? Students would bring their own rifles to school, store them with the team coach and, after classes, collect them for practice. You say: “Williams, you must be crazy! To prevent gun violence, we must do all we can to keep guns out of the hands of kids.” There’s a problem with this reasoning. Prior to the 1960s, many public high schools had shooting clubs. In New York City, shooting clubs were started at Boys, Curtis, Commercial, Manual Training and Stuyvesant high schools. Students carried their rifles to ...

Relationship needs new foundation

Dear Annie: My husband constantly lies by omission of details of what he has done. He has had two affairs with other women — that I know of. He thinks if he tells part of the truth, it is OK. That is how his mind works, and he doesn’t care what I think. What is wrong with him? His mother was the same way. — Questioning in PA Dear Questioning: No matter what sort of mental gymnastics your husband engages in to convince himself he’s not a bad guy, a half-told truth is a lie. If he wants to make things right, he’ll agree to go to marriage counseling with you. A counselor ...
