He walks where he chooses to walk

Years ago, when the great American socialist Norman Thomas was speaking at the University of Virginia, he was cross-examined by a self-satisfied undergraduate who charged that Thomas’ call for universal health insurance, federal civil rights laws and federal aid to education were all backed by the U.S. Communist Party. Thomas, a man of great dignity — and no communist — answered simply, “I walk where I choose to walk.” I had lunch this week with an old friend who, very much like Thomas, walks where he chooses to. A 1968 graduate of the Naval Academy, as a Marine platoon and ...

Still hurting after divorce

Dear Annie: After 46 years, my husband decided to leave me soon after he met a gold-digger overseas. He went about it in a cowardly manner, looking for his condo in secret, although his friends were in on his plans. I was devastated when I accidentally found out and confronted him about it. He admitted that he wanted to leave, and, soon after, did so. For some time, I believed it was a late midlife crisis and he would soon come to his senses. But after several years of living apart, he demanded a divorce and I reluctantly agreed. Soon after the divorce, he asked to become friends ...

Missing son despite moving closer

Dear Annie: I moved here a year ago from another state to be closer to my son and daughter-in-law, but it seems that was not a good idea. I only see them once a month when they come to my home for dinner. I realize they have jobs and a home to tend to, but I am pretty sure they spend more time with her family (10 members) than they do with me. I was alone for Mother’s Day, and I have asked my son four times to go to lunch on his day off, which is Monday every week, and I have been turned down four times. He also is very snarky with his reply to not have lunch, as he said in the last ...

Can Trump still avoid war with Iran?

President Donald Trump does not want war with Iran. America does not want war with Iran. Even the Senate Republicans are advising against military action in response to that attack on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities. “All of us (should) get together and exchange ideas, respectfully, and come to a consensus — and that should be bipartisan,” says Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch of Idaho. When Lindsey Graham said the White House had shown “weakness” and urged retaliatory strikes for what Secretary of State Mike Pompeo calls Iran’s “act of war,” the ...

The wall of welcome

WASHINGTON, D.C. — “I’ve never seen anything like that,” said Vietnam army veteran Harry Streck as he waited for the bus to leave Dulles International Airport. “Never have, and never will (again).” He wasn’t talking about his time in the service, but about what he had just witnessed getting off the plane of the 19th Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight on Saturday. The wall of welcome It was a cacophony of 700 faces and voices, lining the hallways from the concourse to the exit of the terminal, there for one purpose: to honor each of the 132 veterans that walked out of the ...

Get out now!

Dear Annie: I have never felt the need to write in until I read the letter from “Please Help Guide Me,” who is despairing about how her husband of one and a half years is abusive to her and her daughter. My heart was breaking for her, and my blood was boiling. She sounds depressed and thoroughly beaten down, and she needs to get mad and get out NOW, if only for her child. I’ve learned that anger is a great motivator. She must put her daughter’s safety above everything else, keeping in mind that emotional abuse can and often is worse than physical abuse. That mother and child ...
