Sending love after loss

Dear Annie: When I lost our son to suicide in 2012, there were no words to take away the pain. I understood that clumsy attempts to console were well-intended and appreciated the intent. However, there was one card that meant so much that I still keep where I can see it. It says, “Everything that love could do was done.” I would like to help people understand that after a deep loss, one will always have times of sadness. It helps to be allowed to express those sad feelings when they arise. It helps to speak of the one you have lost and to have others share memories of that ...

Facebook needs to face facts on criminal behavior

Say you invented something that became so popular more than a billion people around the globe used it. Wow! You’d be famous worldwide and one of the richest people on earth. But then, say you discovered some of your customers were criminals using your product in nefarious ways. Terrorists were using it to communicate deadly plots among themselves. Con men were using it to scam millions of dollars from unsuspecting and vulnerable people. Child predators using your invention to transmit horrific child pornography. What would your obligation be if law enforcement came knocking at your ...

Not very neighborly

Dear Annie: My neighbor has a huge tree growing squarely in the middle of her yard. The tree is so big that a limb crashed down and broke part of a fence I share with another neighbor. I was left with the repair and the cleanup. When I mentioned this situation and my safety concern to the neighbor with the tree, she responded, “Whatever falls onto your property is not my responsibility.” My understanding is that I have a right to prune branches that might overhang my property, but is it my obligation to hire a company, scale the tree and have it pruned? Isn’t it the homeowner’s ...

Ellen DeGeneres practices tolerance; so should you

In a deeply polarized nation, Ellen DeGeneres deserves praise for practicing tolerance toward others and not choosing her friends based on how they vote — an anomaly these days, especially in far-left Hollywood and the #Resistance movement, whose rabid followers have allowed their political persuasions to extinguish any semblance of civility, open-mindedness and respect for different points of view. Luckily for American pop culture, Tinseltown still has a sliver of rational folks within its city limits. In DeGeneres’ case, she spread goodwill at a football game in Texas last ...

Looking to hop off

Dear Annie: I guess my question is more just about the state of my life. I went to great schools, played college sports, got married to a wonderful woman, and we have four terrific children. We live in a nice house. Yet despite all these outward appearances of success, I don’t feel satisfied. It is as if I work and work, get the house and then want a bigger or new house. No matter what happens, it’s never enough. I finally get that promotion and make a lot more money, and within a year I am complaining that my income is too low. I treat myself and buy a new sports car. It feels ...

Being the best example

Dear Annie: I’m a 62-year-old woman. Twelve months ago, at my check up, my doctor recommended that I eliminate animal products from my diet due to high cholesterol and high blood pressure. It seemed like an insurmountable task, but my will to be healthy as I age is bigger than that! Now a year has passed without any meat, dairy, cheese, fish or eggs. My cholesterol dropped 160 points, my blood pressure is normal. I’m off all medications. My energy is through the roof, and I just signed up for a marathon. I am elated! I want to be a positive influence on my friends and family ...
