The President and the Constitution (again)

In nearly three years in office, President Donald Trump has spent federal dollars not authorized by Congress, separated families and incarcerated children at the Texas/Mexico border in defiance of a federal court order, pulled 1,000 American troops out of Syria ignoring a commitment to allies and facilitating war against civilians, and sent 2,000 troops to Saudi Arabia without a congressional declaration of war. He has also criminally obstructed a Department of Justice investigation of himself but escaped prosecution because of the intercession of an attorney general more loyal to him ...

Missing maid of honor

Dear Annie: My so-called “best friend” (she was the maid of honor at my wedding) ghosted me right after my wedding 23 years ago. I have no idea why she quit communicating, and I’ve pretty much accepted that she will never reach out to me. I’ve tried, several times, to reach out to her and never once received a reply. I haven’t tried to connect with her for several years, but I need to know: How do I stop caring? This hurt me deeply, and I still miss her. My parents called her their third daughter. We were roommates in college and apartment-mates after college. She introduced me ...

GOP pressure on Trump was long overdue

Upon hearing the news that President Trump bowed to pressure from congressional Republicans and reversed his decision to hold next year’s G-7 summit at the Trump National Doral Miami, my immediate response was, “Ah, what might have been.” No, I’m not wistful about the missed opportunity for taxpayers to throw a lifeline to Trump’s struggling resort. Rather, I’m a bit misty-eyed about what the last three years might have looked like if Republicans had shown this kind of spine all along. There is an interesting consensus among the fiercely pro-Trump and anti-Trump forces on ...

Unforgiven infidelity

Dear Annie: Soldiers still cry 50 years after their experiences with horrendous trauma. The letter writer, “Grieving,” is touched forever, too, by her trauma. The list goes on and on of the many things that people experience that they find very difficult to “get over.” Most people are sensitive enough to realize which traumas are the ones that affect the suffering person for many, many years. I’d like to add one trauma that I find gets zero sympathy from others — infidelity. My husband cheated on me when I was seven months pregnant with our second child. When he informed me ...

Trump should want a rapid impeachment

The Ukraine story hasn’t been good for President Donald Trump, and there’s only one way out — to get impeached, and the sooner, the better. Trump obviously hates the idea of being impeached. He thinks it’s unfair, and is raging against the process with every political and legal argument his team can muster and every insult and countercharge he can make on Twitter. But he doesn’t have any choice in the matter. Impeachment is baked in the cake. There’s no way that Democrats, having opened an impeachment inquiry (although without a vote), can pull up short now. How could ...

Power of attorney struggle

Dear Annie: I have been my mom’s power of attorney and medical proxy since she was deemed incompetent with a dementia diagnosis five years ago. I am the youngest of three sisters, and the oldest sibling couldn’t believe she was not “put in charge,” as she told my mom’s elder attorney at a family meeting. It’s all about power, not about what’s best for mom. My sister has made life miserable for me for the last five years, since the decision was made to have my mom moved into a nursing home because of her dementia. I have educated myself and followed the rules and state ...
