WEBSTER CITY -- It came down to six runners to declare a champion of the boys Gold Division at the Lynx Invitational here on Tuesday.
Roland-Story and Manson Northwest Webster finished with 77 points each through their first five runners, but with a 41st out of their No. 6 compared to a 45th from the Cougars’ sixth-place runner, R-S prevailed.
Corben Lucchesi (17:08.56) was the individual winner for the Norseman.
Freshmen Levi Ollinger (18:09.74) and Kyle Widlund (18:13.80) were third and fifth for the Cougars, respectively.
Logan Meyer (19:46.76) was 17th, while Rowan Poutre (19:55.57) was 19th and Thomas Lundberg (22:09.81) was 47th to round out the MNW lineup.
Fort Dodge
The Dodgers turned in a strong performance in a loaded Purple Division bracket.
Fort Dodge was fourth, behind the top-ranked squad (3A) in the state in Gilbert (23) and Nevada (73). The Dodgers tied with Waverly-Shell Rock at 100 points. The Go-Hawks earned third with a faster sixth runner.
"I thought we did pretty well," said FDSH head coach Austin Read. "We talked to the guys about our goal of being in the top three. We ran pretty well and if a few things had gone a little different, we would’ve been (alone in third).
"We ran a technically sound race. It was awesome to see our top guys P.R. in tough conditions."
Senior Cael Hansen (17:36.42) had the best showing for the Dodgers in seventh place. Jayce Point (17:49.96) was ninth and Jones Hensley (18:22.92) finished 17th.
Corban McHone (24th 18:57.21) and Grant Maxson (20:24.93 in 44th) were next in line for the Dodgers. Wayner Landon (21:49.92 in 62nd) and Myles Summers (22:17.58 in 67th) capped the lineup.
"It was great to run against tough competition," Read said. "For Cael, it's huge to be up there at the front and be able to push next to those guys.
"It will benefit him as the season goes on."
St. Edmond
Erik Larson and Aidan Reel both finished in the Top-15 for the Gaels, who were fifth with 119 points.
"We talked before about not worrying about the heat (temperatures climbed to near 90 with triple-digit heat indices) and just going out and running," said SEHS head coach Mike Szalat. "If you go in with a negative mindset, that's going to hurt you. If you have a good mindset, it helps in building your mental toughness.
"I'm very pleased with the kids. We got mentally tougher."
Larson (19:05.15) was 10th and Reel (19:24.78) crossed in 13th. Andrew Barwin (20:30.64) took 27th, Gordon Seeden (21:04.87) 33rd and Ethan Cibert (21:42.49) 41st.
Also running for St. Edmond was Abram Ribbens (22:18.15 in 49th) and Dylan Brokaw (25:05.79) in 67th.
"I feel like Erik is one of those guys that can go out a little faster in the 800," Szalat said. "That might be a better prescription for him to do that.
"Aidan P.R.'d by about 30 seconds, and our sixth man Abram stepped up. We threw some freshmen in the mix and they P.R.'d as well. I think we grew as a program."
Southeast Valley
The Jaguars were third with 87 points, placing all five runners in the Top-25.
Owen Nuss (19:14.32) finished 11th and Griffin Vote (19:41.28) was 15th.
