Dodgers end 18-hole tournament drought

Frevert is runner up as FD wins Garth Invite

MASON CITY -- It's been a long time coming for the Fort Dodge boys golf team.

For the first time in 24 seasons, the Dodger golf team captured a team title at an 18-hole Invitational.

The Dodgers shot a 308 to capture the Dick Garth Invitational in Mason City on Friday.

Mason City was next in line with a 319, followed by Waterloo West (338), Des Moines Lincoln (358) and Waterloo East (414).

"It's a really big deal," said Fort Dodge head coach Nick Vinson. "We haven't played good golf as a whole team all year.

"To see them come together and have three kids in the 70s and one stroke from having four, is incredible. We haven't sniffed that since I've been here."

The last time Fort Dodge won an 18-hole crown was in 2002 under then head coach Tom Kinseth.

Senior Mason Frevert was the meet runner up, firing a 73, one-over-par. Mason City's Nathan Berkely set the Riverhawk school record, going seven-under-par for a 65.

"Mason was steady all day long," Vinson said. "He kept fighting all day long, doing what he needed to do. He just stayed the course and didn't hit the panic button.

"It's a big deal to go out and beat four teams."

Frevert had five birdies on the day. He was two-over on the front nine and one-under on the back.

Trace Rial (77), Davis Underberg (78) and Camden Sassman (80) were the counting scores for the Dodgers. Cameron Beck (91) and Holden Doster (91) also competed for the Dodgers.

Fort Dodge had 17 birdies on the day. Sassman had five, Underberg with four, Rial had two and Doster had one.

"It's great to see three guys go under 80 and one real close," Vinson said. "Trace and Davis are very capable and to see Camden come in with that score is huge for the team.

"The biggest test moving forward is if we can do this more than one."

The Dodgers are back in action on Tuesday when they host the Fort Dodge Invitational.
