Tritons double up at home invite

It was a clean sweep for the Iowa Central golf program in their 2023 home debut at the Fort Dodge Country Club on Monday.

The Triton men and women secured team titles at the Iowa Central Fall Kickoff tournament, with DMACC placing second in both races. On the individual front, Triton freshman Ivanna Becerra-Diaz took first place with a round of five-over par 76.

“I’m incredibly proud of our men,” ICCC head coach Kris Graewin said. “We’ve graduated a lot of our varsity lineup (from 2022-23), and this year’s group has come in and worked so hard.

“I’m very impressed with how our women played as well. We were able to replace (the graduated regulars from a season ago) with some very talented freshmen. Ivanna has been playing incredibly steady, and I couldn’t be happier for her to get her first collegiate win.”

Colby Ramsdale paced the Triton men with a one-over 72. Nico Booyens (73) and Kai Hielckert (73) were next in line, followed by Ben Christy (75) and Manning Lane (76).

“I couldn’t be happier for Colby and how he played,” Graewin said. “He had a tough first tournament for us, and really bounced back with a solid round.

“Nico and Kai are our returnees from last year, and they’ve taken on big leadership roles for us.”

Liv Tait (78), Olivia Eckert (85), Brooklynn Backoff (85) and Jenna Kramer (87) flanked Becerra-Diaz’s efforts to clinch women’s gold for Iowa Central.

“Liv was battling a little sickness, so I couldn’t be more proud of how she battled through it,” Graewin said. “We’ve got a very talented group throughout the entire roster, and I’m looking forward to seeing how we stack up with our district all year.”

Iowa Central’s 293 in the men’s competition was followed by the Bears (299), the Grinnell junior varsity squad (314), Hawkeye (319) and Iowa Lakes (322). The Tritons had a 324 for the women’s crown, with DMACC (330), William Penn JV (359) and Hawkeye (363) next in line.

The Iowa Central men return to action on Wednesday at the North Central District Fall Preview in Waterloo. The Buena Vista Invitational is in Storm Lake this Saturday and Sunday for both Triton teams.
