Perry twirls gem for Gael baseball squad

Messenger photo by Britt Kudla: Emanuel Perry of St. Edmond struck out nine in a shutout on Friday at Rogers Park.

Emanuel Perry put together a dominant effort on the mound and the St. Edmond baseball team capped the week off with a 2-0 win over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows here Friday night at Rogers Park.

Perry, a senior, struck out nine, walked four and allowed just three hits in a complete-game performance.

Jackson Palmer, John Nemmers and Landon Bartlett each had two hits, with Bartlett and Perry adding an RBI each for the Gaels (5-7 overall, 3-3 in North Central Conference).

“I’ve said it numerous times, but Emanuel has just been a different guy this year,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “He seems to be enjoying the game and he was really in command and control out there.

“Our defense played great behind him and he kept their hitters off balance all night long.”

St. Edmond struck first in the opening inning, as Perry plated Palmer with a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. The Cowboys (3-13, 0-6), though, were able to get out of the jam down just 1-0.

In the third, Bartlett drove in Palmer with a base hit, but again, Clarion-Goldfield/Dows found a way to stay in it by pitching out of another situation.

“We hit the ball hard…we just weren’t quite able to put together a big inning,” Szalat said. “It really was a great baseball game and a big one for us in terms of the district.”

The Gaels found out on Friday that they will be grouped with Lake Mills, Mason City Newman, North Iowa, West Bend-Mallard, West Fork and West Hancock in Class 1A, District 4.

“Clarion-Goldfield/Dows plays a lot of those teams, so we’ll be able to compare what we did to possible opponents,” Szalat said. “Plus, we’ve got a win over a common opponent now, so that’s a positive.”

Johnny Dickerson stole two bases and eight different St. Edmond players reached base.

For the Cowboys, Wyatt DeCoster drew two walks with Preston Gardner, Cael Chase and Carson Nesheim each recording a hit.

The Gaels head to Humboldt on Monday to finish a suspended game and play the Wildcats a second time immediately after.
