AUDUBON – The North Union defense was up for the challenge for most of the game here on Thursday night against top-ranked Audubon.
Unfortunately for the eighth-ranked Warriors, the Wheelers proved to be too much to handle.
Audubon used several big plays from quarterback Aiden Kjergaard to secure a 59-34 victory in an eight-player quarterfinal, advancing to the UNI-Dome next week.
The Warriors (9-2 overall) recorded turnovers on the first two possessions of the game for the Wheelers and forced a punt on their third. They converted one of those when Carson Crouch got into the end zone to make it 7-0.
But Audubon (11-0), who came in averaging 70 points a game, got going when Kjergaard converted a fourth-and-1 for a long TD run. The junior had three rushing touchdowns in the first half and three more in the second.
Kjergaard finished with over 350 rushing yards, as Mason Kasperbauer added 137 and two scores.
Along with Crouch's TD run, Max Heinen caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Greyson Colegrove in the second quarter. Cooper Hoye had a pair of TD catches from Colegrove in the second half.
Senior Gabe Whaley had a touchdown run late in the fourth for the Warriors.
Colegrove had over 300 yards of total offense and three passing touchdowns, with Crouch running for 101 and a score.
Woodbine, Iowa Valley and Gladbrook-Reinbeck won quarterfinal round games to advance to the final four.
