Carver named NSIC player of the week

Ex-Dodger QB accounts for 496 yards, 5 TDs from scrimmage

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Quarterback Connor Carver had another huge game for the Bemidji State football team last Saturday as the Beavers captured the annual Battle Axe Trophy with a 37-34 victory over Minnesota State Moorhead.

Carver's 496 yards and five touchdowns from scrimmage garnered the former Fort Dodge Senior High all-stater Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference player of the week honors for the second time this season.

Carver completed 17 of 27 passes for 323 yards, adding 173 rushing yards on 30 carries. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound junior tossed four TD scores and added a fifth on the ground.

"Obviously every game you go into the week trying to figure out what will work best for your chances," Carver said. "At the end of the day, though, you just have to have the guys go out and do it. The offensive line played amazing, giving me all day to make plays. And when I did put the ball up, my receivers went and did their thing.

"It's a great feeling to kind of finally have that overall trust. To really be able to take over (the quarterback position), dish the rock and give guys opportunities to succeed is a great feeling. Whatever it takes to win at the end of the day."

The Beavers finished with 569 yards of total offense in the win. Bemidji State is now 4-5 on the season.

On the year, the 2023 FDSH graduate has rushed for 791 yards and 10 TDs at an average of 6.3 yards per carry -- all tops on the team. Carver has also thrown for 540 yards and seven scores with just one interception.

Last month, Carver set a single-game NSIC record with 335 rushing yards in a home win over Minot State.

The Beavers will next take on No. 17 Minnesota-Duluth at home on Saturday at 1 p.m.
