FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Iowa Central cross country teams were in action here this past weekend at the Chile Pepper Festival.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, the teams ran in pink uniforms while competing in the Prairie Fire section of the meet, which was co-hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Overall, the Triton men finished second out of 22 teams while the women were 10th. Teshager Kassa was third while Beyon Prins finished 19th and Lee-Hanro Arendse was 20th.
"We were without our typical fourth and fifth runners due to injuries," ICCC head coach Dee Brown said. "Because of the rainy weather, this was our first 8km of the season and by design, I would never want this to be our first race at this distance. I'd prefer to have one under the belt prior so they have a better idea of what needs to be done.
"That aside, they performed well as a team and the guys really stepped up with two of our guys down right now."
For the women, Zosia Zdobylak went wire-to-wire, winning the race in a time of 17:31.5. Maddie Maclean was 47th.
"Eight of our nine women ran personal bests," Brown said. "They are improving a great deal each week and it is exciting to see. This week, as a team, they averaged over a minute better than their previous personal records.
"We still have a ways to go, but honestly there is a lot more in the tank with this women's team. Hopefully we can be ready in November."
Iowa Central runs this Friday in Ottumwa at the Indian Hills Invitational.
