Titans hand ESC first loss

WALL LAKE – The South Central Calhoun football team bounced back with a dominating performance here Friday night over East Sac County, 35-12.

Garrett Krause ran for 150 yards and three touchdowns, as Cooper Nattress added 131 and two scores for the Titans (5-1 overall, 2-1 in district), who never trailed.

For the Raiders (5-1, 2-1), Beckem Kluver had a touchdown catch from Weston Julin as part of a wild finish to the first half.

After 20 minutes of scoreless action, the two teams combined for 33 points in the final four minutes, including two TDs in the last 41 seconds of the half.

Nattress helped the Titans overcome several penalties, scoring on an eight-yard run to the end zone on an extended 11-play series. The drive included a key fourth-down conversion by John Patterson.

South Central Calhoun took advantage of a Tucker Berner interception on the following series, with Patterson finding Evan Myers on fourth-and-19 for a score. The Titans got back on track after suffering a 7-6 loss to Emmetsburg last week.

East Sac County finally got going thanks to a big kickoff return by Beckem Kluver. More penalties by the Titans set the Raiders up for a 44-yard pitch-and-catch by Weston Julin to Kluver just before the half.

Krause took over in the second half, scoring in the third and fourth while adding an interception on defense. Nattress finished off a six-minute drive for a touchdown in the fourth to seal the deal.

Julin found Carson Schmitt on a short touchdown pass late in the fourth. Julin threw for 109 yards on the night.

During play in the second quarter, East Sac County senior Colson Kies was injured. Kies was taken off the field and transported by ambulance.

South Central Calhoun hosts reigning district champion Manson Northwest Webster next. The Cougars knocked off the E-Hawks last night, 20-14. East Sac County heads to Pocahontas Area.
