Titans can’t get past Underwood

2 min read

UNDERWOOD – The South Central Calhoun football team played as well of a first half as possible here Friday night.

Unfortunately, the second half did not go in favor of the eighth-ranked Titans.

Fifth-ranked Underwood rallied to advance in Class 1A with a 32-14 victory over South Central Calhoun. The Eagles (9-1 overall) will face No. 4 Treynor, a 35-0 winner over Shenandoah, next Friday for a spot in the UNI-Dome.

Cooper Nattress scored on two short TD runs in the first half as the Titans capitalized on three turnovers. Tucker Berner picked off his fifth pass of the year to set up the first Nattress score after a big return.

Hayden Stickrod picked off another pass in the second quarter, leading to another Nattress touchdown from a yard out. South Central Calhoun also recovered a fumble to halt an Eagle run just before the break.

Coming into the game, Nash Mitchell had just six interceptions on 219 pass attempts this season.

Stickrod also blocked an extra-point on special teams.

In the second half, though, Underwood forced turnovers on the first three possessions for South Central Calhoun. River Allen had his second and third TD runs of the night over the final 24 minutes, as Mitchell had two passing scores to Jackson Brecher and Riley Hughes.

The eight wins for the Titans were their most since 2021, when they also went 8-2 for a second consecutive season.
