Garrigan rolls into quarterfinals

ALGONA – The fifth-ranked Bishop Garrigan football team scored a little bit of revenge and earned another spot in the eight-player quarterfinals here Friday night.

The Golden Bears eliminated Remsen St. Mary's, 64-27, advancing to a showdown with No. 3 Woodbine on Thursday night. The winner of that game moves to the UNI-Dome and the state semifinals.

Bishop Garrigan, the defending state champions, struck early and often in building a 38-20 halftime lead. From there, they allowed just a late fourth quarter score to the Hawks, who knocked them out of the final four in 2024 on their way to winning it all.

"We didn't really change anything up (on defense in the second half)," BGHS head coach Marty Wadle said. "Honestly, we just tackled better. (Remsen St. Mary's quarterback Dalton) Klein is a load to bring down, but the kids just did a better job tackling him.

"On offense, we played really well. We controlled the offensive line and the backs ran hard."

Carter Cink ran 14 times for 166 yards and scored three touchdowns while CJ McGregor added 157 yards and four scores on 13 attempts. Jerad Graves threw a TD pass to Weston Rosenmeyer and Jack Moeller had a pick-6 for the other Golden Bear scores.

On defense, Cink and Madden Miller each recorded eight tackles.

Woodbine, who lost to Bishop Garrigan in the state championship a season ago 44-42, advanced with a 34-26 victory over Lenox. The Tigers rallied after falling behind at the half, 14-10.
