ALGONA – The St. Edmond volleyball team wrapped up regular season play here Saturday at the Algona October Invitational.
The Gaels earned wins over Forest City and Decorah, falling to Spencer and fourth-ranked (Class 2A) Riverside.
Ellasyn Whitmore had 13 blocks during the tournament for St. Edmond.
"Ellasyn was a gamechanger for the weekend," SEHS head coach Lindsay Heffernan said. "Her growth throughout the season has been so enjoyable to watch, and she is really figuring out the game.
"An injury to Emmy Horn late last week forced us to run a new rotation, but the girls are adjusting well and still finding chemistry and success."
Both wins for St. Edmond (xxx overall) came in three sets, as they topped Forest City, 21-8, 9-22 and 15-11, and Decorah, 19-21, 21-19 and 16-14. They fell to Spencer, 21-16, 23-21, and Riverside, 21-14, 21-14.
The Gaels will now host North Iowa on Monday night in an opening-round regional game beginning at 7 p.m.
"I'd love for the Fort Dodge communities to come together and fill the gym," Heffernan said. "St. Edmond volleyball players are running a toy drive next week to honor one of our own little Gael volleyball players, Hannah, who was recently diagnosed and is fighting cancer.
"For those wanting to give back, they can bring a new toy to the drive Monday night at the game or drop off at the school offices this week."
