DES MOINES -- The Fort Dodge boys and girls cross country teams had a strong night at the Iowa Alliance Conference Meet on Wednesday night.
Senior Cael Hansen (16:35.8) had the second best race of his career and was just off his PR of 16:31.
"Cael ran a great race," said Fort Dodge head coach Austin Read. "He pulled away from the pack in the sixth position.
"We just had our biggest workout of the season with 1K repeats, where the kids run at their goal pace and I told them if they could do this in training they could do this in a race. (Tonight) Cael was nearly at the 1K repeat pace. It was kind of one of those I told you so moments if you do this, this will happen."
Classmate Jayce Point (17:19.7) was ninth, followed by Jones Hensley (18:32.6), Grant Maxson (18:42.6), Corban McHone (19:11.2), Landon Waynar (20:38.3) and Wesley Anderson (21:00.9).
The Dodgers placed fourth in the team standings with 97 points. Marshalltown (53) edged Des Moines Roosevelt (54) for the team title. Mason City (58) was third.
"Jayce ran a solid race, wasn't quite where he wanted to be, but it was good," Read said. "Jones and Grant ran well and it was great to get Corban back."
Junior Linnie Pratt turned in her best performance of the season, clocking a 21:39.9 to place 10th in the individual standings.
"Linnie went 21:28 as a freshman, so she is closing in on that PR," Read said. "She never got under 22 last year, so it's great to see her get a positive result like that."
Des Moines Roosevelt (48) was the team champion, followed by Mason City (55), Marshalltown (62) and Des Moines Hoover (109).
Senior Madison Carmody (25:41.4) was next in line for the Dodgers in 37th place. Junior Laila Grantham (26:57.6) was 40th and senior Ella Johnson (28:03.9) was 43rd.
"They (girls) raced really well," Read said. "Ella ran a great race and cut about 90 seconds off her time.
"Rey (Lacina) ran a great race and was under 30 for the first time this year. Jalynn (Jackson-Foy) ran a good race as well."
The Dodgers are back in action on Wednesday when they run in a Class 4A state qualifying meet in Marshalltown.
