DES MOINES – The Fort Dodge girls tennis team ran into a perennial state contender here Wednesday in Class 2A regional action.
West Des Moines Dowling claimed the six singles matches to advance to a regional final over the Dodgers, 6-0.
The Maroons (10-3 overall) will now play Urbandale (11-5) on Saturday for the Region 4 title.
Fort Dodge (5-9) advanced with a 5-2 win over Sioux City West on the road last week. The Dodgers had reeled off four consecutive dual victories before the loss to Dowling.
"That is the best team we have faced all year," FDSH head coach Julie Astor said of the Maroons, "and that isn't even close. I was proud of the effort of the girls. They didn't back down.
"There were a lot of close games, but it just wasn't our day. It was a tough way for our seniors to go out, but they did everything I asked of them. I hope there are some young girls out there to fill their shoes."
Mia Carpenter, Evah Nostrom, Teagan Loots, Brooklyn Kaloupek, Leah Myer and Grace Rivera all dropped singles matches for the Dodgers. Carpenter, Nostrom, Loots, Kaloupek and Rivera are all seniors.
