NEWELL – The St. Edmond football team used another balanced offensive attack to secure a 40-28 victory over Newell-Fonda here Friday night.
Thomas Ehn threw for 230 yards, hitting both Blake Bartlett and Ty Mericle for scoring strikes. The junior showed off his legs with a rushing score and 68 yards.
Matthew Crimmins, who went for over 200 yards on the ground last week in a victory over Glidden-Ralston, surpassed the 100-yard mark vs. the Mustangs, scoring three times.
“That might be our identity,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “We have to work for everything on offense, but they figured it out.”
Outside of two long running plays by Gunnar Baron and Jackson Bellcock, the St. Edmond (2-1 overall, 1-0 in district) defense held strong, forcing multiple scoreless possessions.
“Those guys played incredible,” Dillon said. “Credit (defensive coordinator Mark) McDermott for putting in a great gameplan. The kids executed and only really gave up those two long run plays to start the game and the second half.”
Mericle finished with five receptions for 82 yards and a score, as Bartlett added four for 76 and a touchdown. Griffin Laufersweiler added six receptions for 42 yards.
For Newell-Fonda, Baron ran for 110 yards and two scores while Bellcock had 105 and a score.
St. Edmond returns to Dodger Stadium next Friday, hosting Remsen St. Mary’s for Homecoming.
