The St. Edmond football team knew they were in for a track meet here Friday night on Homecoming vs. Remsen St. Mary's.
Unfortunately for the Gaels, it was the Hawks who could not be caught.
Behind a 55-point opening half, Remsen St. Mary's picked up a convincing 84-34 victory over St. Edmond inside Dodger Stadium.
Dalton Klein had four rushing touchdowns and one in the air, as the Hawks piled up over 400 yards rushing in avenging a loss to St. Edmond (2-2 overall, 1-1 in district) last year. In that game, Remsen St. Mary's – the 2024 state champion – was forced to forfeit to the Gaels at halftime due to injuries.
Tyten Waldschmitt added 117 yards rushing and three touchdowns in the first half as part of that offensive explosion for Remsen St. Mary's (3-1, 2-0).
"We knew they were going to be tough to stop," SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. "We had a couple of turnovers and some drives stalled out that kept us from staying with them. That is a very, very good football program that overcame all that happened to them last year."
For the Gaels, Thomas Ehn had 221 yards passing and four touchdowns, with three to Ty Mericle, as the junior added 93 yards on the ground and a 38-yard touchdown. Mericle, a senior, finished with eight receptions for 126 yards, as classmate Griffin Laufersweiler added six receptions for 65 yards.
Up next for the Gaels will be a trip to defending state champion Bishop Garrigan while Remsen St. Mary's heads to Kingsley-Pierson for a district contest.
