Schlegel earns Top-5 finish

MASON CITY – Grace Schlegel put together another strong run, placing fifth here Tuesday at the Riverhawk Invitational.
Competing against several Class 4A and 3A runners, Schlegel, a sophomore for St. Edmond, put together a time of 21:18. Mason City Newman's Alexis Mujica was the race winner in 18:26.
Schlegel's teammate, Naomi Valles, was ninth, recording a time of 21:37.
"Our top three ran well," said St. Edmond head coach Mike Szalat. "Grace was within six seconds of her PR, while Naomi and Mae set a PR.
"We talked about how we're ranked 20th now, so now we have something to protect."
Algona's Charli Dodds finished fourth overall, as Webster City's Izzy Grossoehme finished seventh.
Des Moines Roosevelt won with 65 points, as host Mason City was second. Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, Ames, Webster City, St. Edmond, Lake Mills, Mason City Newman, Algona, Hampton-Dumont/CAL, Emmetsburg, South Hamilton, Fort Dodge and Belmond-Klemme rounded out the team standings.
Rounding out the scoring for St. Edmond were Mae Pokorny in 51st, Lily Eslick in 58th and Greenlee Crimmins in 61st. Alex Leiting placed 71st and Betsy Gruver 75th.
Linnie Pratt paced the Dodgers, as the junior was 35th in 23:17. Laila Grantham finished 66th, Madison Carmody was 70th, Ella Johnson finished 88th, Reina Lacina was 92nd and Gabby Wirtz 93rd.
"It was a net positive," said Fort Dodge head coach Austin Read. "We had quite a few girls that had their best races of the season. We are seeing improvement and there is a lot of positives to take away."
Joining Grossoehme for the Lynx was Lyla Brookshire, as the eighth-grader placed 21st. Rubi Andrade-Murillo was 40th, Mckenna Buakham finished 49th and Quynn Pruismann was 59th. Algona's other counting runners were Chelsy Vicente-Gomez in 30th, Hadley Friedrich in 47th, Evelyn Kissinger in 48th and Karsyn Bailey in 74th.
Emmetsburg's top finish came from Janey-Lynn Reedy, as she finished 27th. Mya Morton was 32nd, Taylor Thayer 34th, Abigail Biddle 54th and Mikayla Johnson 63rd.
Both St. Edmond and Fort Dodge will head to Algona on Monday to compete next.
