The St. Edmond girls tennis team was dealt a tough blow even before stepping on the court with Boone.
Over the weekend, senior Chloe Palmer suffered an injury that forced her out of the lineup against the second-ranked Toreadors on Monday. Boone would go on to post a 9-0 victory over the Gaels.
The loss of Palmer forced changes in the rotation, as Abby Huss and Jade Rock played together in doubles for the first time, dropping an 8-3 decision. Emmersyn Peters and Lizzy Tiernan made their varsity debut in doubles, falling 8-4.
"Without Chloe, everyone was moved up a spot and it kind of threw things off," SEHS head coach Shawn Neverman said. "I was proud of the way the girls battled against the No. 2 team in the state while not at full strength.
"The girls have been on a roll this season and haven't even really been tested. They saw what one of the best teams in the state looks like (in Boone), and it was a very good lesson for the girls moving forward on how to win with class and lose with grace."
Seniors Palmer, Huss, Peters, Sophia Schlienz, Nina Smith and Tiernan were honored.
"These girls have given so much to the program," Neverman said. "We are so grateful that they decided to be part of St. Edmond tennis."
Mary Ella Gruver earned the lone junior varsity win for St. Edmond.
Up next for the Gaels will be North Central Conference action at Webster City on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
