WEBSTER CITY – A ball-control offense and four turnovers by the defense helped Webster City secure a 21-7 victory over Humboldt here Friday night.
Kaleb Hansen had two short rushing scores and Coyce Bertran added one, as the Lynx earned their 68th win over the Wildcats in the 110th meeting between North Central Conference rivals.
Hansen's first two-yard TD run capped off a drive that took up nearly 10 minutes of the first quarter, finishing with 89 yards rushing on 28 carries. Bertran added 44 yards rushing and Grayson Simonton had 30.
On that drive, Hansen, a senior, ran for 47 yards on 11 rushes, with Alex Staley hitting Grant Arends on a key 5-yard pass on fourth-and-4 to keep the series going.
Bertran and Simonton each picked off passes, with Arends and Edwin Ramos Nolasco both recovering fumbles for Webster City (1-4 overall, 1-0 in district). Arends also broke up a pair of passes by Humboldt (0-5, 0-1).
Arends recovered his fumble on the first snap of the second half, with Hansen capping off a five-minute drive with his second touchdown run. Bertran added his score late in the fourth after the Webster City defense forced a turnover on downs.
Cash McIntire ran for 89 yards for the Wildcats, as sophomore Noah Elman made his first start at quarterback. He hit Dawson Sleiter on a 44-yard pass in the final seconds.
It marked the first passing touchdown for Elman in his career, and the first receiving TD for Sleiter, a junior.
The Lynx head to Sioux Center next Friday while Humboldt will host Algona.
