IOWA CITY -- Both Iowa and Iowa State started the season with big wins.
Now things ramp up in Week 2.
For the 73rd time in history, the 22nd ranked Hawkeyes (1-0 overall) and the Cyclones (1-0) will meet as part of the Cy-Hawk Series.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. inside Kinnick Stadium.
The contest will be televised on NBC.
Iowa leads the series 46-25 in a series that began in 1894. The Hawkeyes are 25-15 all-time against Iowa State inside Kinnick Stadium. The Cyclones have won the last two meetings in Iowa City, winning 10-7 in 2022 and 20-19 in 2024.
"I know it's a big deal," said first year yead coach Jimmy Rogers. "I know how important the rivalry is . The first thing people said when I came here, was win this one and it's a good year.
"We have to bring the intensity in the stadium. This is not an ordinary game, it's always amped up. We were creating chaos at practice and harping things that truly matter."
The last eight meetings in the series have been decided by 10 points or fewer. The last four matchups have been one score games and three of the four have been decided by a field goal or less.
Last year Iowa State pulled out a 16-13 victory in Ames on a 54-yard field goal from Kyle Konrardy, which was his fourth of the contest.
Last week in their win over Northern Illinois, the Hawkeyes erupted for 507 yards of total offense in a 40-0 win.
"They (Iowa) are very well coached by Kirk Ferentz, who is a coaching legend," Rogers said. "He has done a lot and he's been able to do and the longevity in his career.
"They are physical and technically sound. They don't care if you know what they are going to do, they'll just do it. We have to play as hard as they do and play 60 minutes in a hectic environment."
The Hawkeyes rushed for 298 yards and had 26 first downs.
The unit had 251 yards in the first quarter and 372 yards in the first half, the most in an opening half since 2019 against Middle Tennessee State (358).
Iowa rushed for 298 yards on 38 attempts, averaging 7.6 yards per carry.
Kamari Moulton rushed for a career-high 183 yards and two touchdowns, on runs of 50 and 37 yards.
"Saturday was a positive start for our football team," Ferentz said. "Pleased with the effort overall and always good to look at the film. A day later there are always a lot of things that need to be addressed, certainly details that can be cleaned up.
"Penalty situation wasn’t great. We had a turnover that probably could have been avoided. We weren’t great in the short yardage and goal-line area. So those are areas that need to be worked on a little bit."
Iowa State opened the Rogers era with a 38-10 victory over Southeast Missouri State.
"Iowa State basically has a new staff and basically a new team in a lot of regards. A lot of new players, new faces certainly," said Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. "Coach Rogers has done a great job everywhere he’s been.
"He was an outstanding defensive coordinator at South Dakota State and then took over and did a really wonderful job there, and did an impressive job last year at Washington State last year."
Thirty Cyclones made their Iowa State debut in the contest.
"The players that come onto this team work to get on the field," Rogers said. They (walk ons) get on this team and bet on themselves."
Jaylen Raynor accounted for four touchdowns for the Cyclones. He threw for two scores and ran for two more.
Isaac Terrell led the Iowa State defense with three sacks. The Cyclones gained 303 total yards compared to 209 for Southeast Missouri State.
The Cyclones defense forced three takeaways.
"You watch them on film. They were very impressive," Ferentz said. "A little bit like last week, a lot of new faces to try to piece together, looking at their roster, and a little bit like last weekend that at least from a schematic standpoint I think we have a decent feel for what to expect — although it’s still early season, so you never know 100% what it’s going to look like.
"There’s a lot of similarities between what they’re doing now defensively and what they were doing when we played South Dakota State out here. Looking at what they did at Washington State, it was very impressive, very good defensive football team. I think that’s what you’re seeing on last week. Certainly the same thing there."
